Tuna is one of the great fishes to catch whether for big-game fishing or commercial purposes. In big game fishing, catching tuna is an exciting adventure as they are great sport fish that will challenge your skill in fishing. They will usually yank the line out of the reel or move around in circles. If you want to explore the fun and excitement, here are some techniques and tips on how to fish for tuna. Trolling is one technique popularly used in catching tuna. In this method of fishing, one or more fishing lines with baits and lures are drawn from behind the boat. Another popular method on how to fish for tuna is chumming, where a chum bag containing chopped or ground fish parts is attached to the stern of the boat, attracting baitfish as it scatters in the water and eventually attracting bigger fishes like tuna. Do your fishing early in the morning or late afternoon where there is low lighting, as tuna tends to bite better with low lighting. Although these fishes are elusive, a little patience and a good fishing technique will eventually pay off. One tip that you can follow in finding these great fishes is to watch out for the seabirds diving on a specific area, it may give a hint of baitfishes nearby. Of course, the baitfishes attract tuna and other bigger fishes. The sight of dolphins may also mean having groups of tuna nearby as they usually travel together with sharks and dolphins. It is also important to know where to find tuna in certain seasons. In summer, or in warmer seasons, you can most often find tuna near the surface of the water making them easy to catch during these seasons. During winter, they hunt for food in the deeper waters, thus fishing for tuna during these months may also mean fishing in deep waters. To learn how to fish for tuna, keep in mind the types of bait that tuna prefers including the lures that are effective in each type of tuna. It also helps to check out the correct temperature and depths that different types of tuna prefer. Baits usually effective for tuna are bluefish, skipjacks, squids and mackerel. On the other hand, lures for tuna may include those that have Kona head which create bubble trail and surface action that can easily attract tuna. You can also use strip baits, large spoons, skirted lures and plugs. These are also useful when you go out trolling as well. If it is your first time in fishing tuna, it might be useful not only to learn how to fish tuna but in managing it when you finally catch one. Keep in mind that tuna are great fighter fishes and they can yank the line off your reel if you get them on bait. Especially if you are going out to catch tuna for the first time, it may help a lot to have a fishing buddy who is familiar with tuna fishing. If you do get a large tuna, you may have to battle with it until you can finally get it up to the boat.
